I am an advertising student who loves videography, baking and martial arts. As a kid I made movies and tried to recreate recipes from memory with my friends. As I got older, I learned the dedication, time management and attention to detail that those passions demanded.
In high school I took many culinary arts and video production classes, and that’s where I fell in love with the camera. I learned how to plan, shoot and edit videos on my own and as a team while also learning how to run back and forth between classes to finish multiple projects. Senior year I made a short documentary about what happiness meant to different people at my school. It took almost three months, and later that summer it was one of twelve videos out of over one hundred selected for a film festival in Portland.
After a gap year in which I was able to save my love for school, I came to the University of Oregon as a cinema studies major. I quickly added advertising as a second major and began to seek creative opportunities that worked for people. This is also when I discovered my love for martial arts. The community was strong and kind, and helped me gain a confidence I didn’t know I could have. At the end of my freshman year I co-founded the Coalition of Women’s Martial Arts, a club dedicated to being a safe space for women and newcomers. There I made posters , videos, communicated with other clubs and posted regularly on Instagram. My efforts amounted to almost doubled attendance in one year, and multiple get-togethers that had members from all of the clubs on campus.
During sophomore year I took all of those skills and became a part of a student run organization Common Studios LLC. I was able to become a videographer for a local coffee shop, Farmers Union Coffee Roasters, where I planned and created two videos every week to post on their Instagram and TikTok. One of the videos I made has over 80k views on Instagram! That job helped me become an independent worker, and the confidence I had from school helped me advocate for new ideas for the brand.
Now, as I go into my last year of college, I am proud to be coaching students who were once where I was by helping them learn about video, audio and lighting equipment. During all of the other things that go on as a senior, I will continue to search for more opportunities to be an advertiser. Whether it be for clubs, a new job at a business or my own endeavors , I know that finding new communities will always be what keeps me going.
